I want to use my phone less.
I have a variety of reasons. One of the main ones is privacy: I don't like the potential my phone has for spying on me and I don't like my privacy being invaded for companies to better advertise to me. Beyond that, I find it annoying to have to unlock my phone to use certain features, and navigating through menus and typing on a phone screen both get annoying. I am working on finding non-phone-based alternatives for some of the features for which I use my phone.
The table below lists phone features I use, what I use them for, what I can use as a replacement/whether replacing them is feasible, and whether I've started using a replacement yet. Some features I may not try to replace, depending on practicality. I am choosing to list those features here to highlight how many things I have to use my phone for.
Feature | Use | Replacement | Started using yet? |
---|---|---|---|
Clock | Telling time | Watch | No |
Notes | Making notes, writing when inspiration strikes me and I'm not at my personal computer | Notebook | Yes |
Google Maps | Navigation, estimating how much time it will take me to get somewhere | Not replaceable | N/A |
Clock | Timer | Kitchen timer | No |
Libby | Reading library ebooks | Not replaceable for the ebooks; can take out physical books from library | N/A |
MFA Apps | Multi-factor authentication | Not replaceable | N/A |
Bike Computer | Tracking my bike rides | I'm more or less okay with this one, since it's an open-source project I got from the F-Droid store | N/A |
Google Calendar | Keeping track of events | Planner | No |
